Polo Sports

Elephants Polo

Elephants have been a part of Indian culture since times immemorial; they have been representative of strength and power of Kings and Emperors. In olden days no religious ceremony, celebration, wedding, etc. would be complete without a row of gaily decorated well caparisoned elephants. It was therefore natural that Polo - the king of sports was incorporated to be played on elephants as well.

Jaipur has had a long and colourful association with Elephants and it is one of the only places in the word where you can witness and participate in this exclusive sport throughout the year. Watching / Participating in it is a unique and unforgetful experience. It is probably the safest outdoor sport.

The colossal size of the elephant evokes awe, yet its docile nature and doleful eyes, its graceful movements have always fascinated man. Its majestic presence has been associated with regal splendour and Elephants have always remained a important paraphernalia of the Kings. Though the elephants lack the speed and agility of horses, it is great fun to watch these enormous pachyderms moving around the field after the ball at great speed, of course in elephantine standard.

There is one player on one elephant, which is ridden by the Mahout. The game is played over four chukkers (round) of seven minutes each. Players change after every round in order to ensure that maximum guests get an opportunity to participate and enjoy the experience.

Horse Polo

As an embodiment of courage, sportsmanship and equestrian skill, Polo has been the traditional sport of the Indian Nobility since the medieval period. Foremost among the warrior Princes who natured this game of Kings, were the Rajputs of the northern India. Renowned for their chivalry and valour, they cherished the sport as a proving ground for the horsemanship and ability of young men and soldiers.

Polo is a game that signifies power, adventure, beauty, elegance, grace, teamwork, class and above all Tradition. For a game as "exclusive as elusive" the real home of Polo is India. Since the days of Emperor Akbar, it has been the Indian Maharajas that have given this game its Royal Tradition.

Polo is a stick and ball game played on horseback, is the oldest of all equestrian sports and according to some authorities the oldest organized sport of any kind. From its conception as a rough, disorganized, war like spectacle, Polo has evolved into a highly refined sophisticated sport combining the excitement of horse racing, hockey and soccer.

Polo is played on an outdoor grass field, 300 yds long and 200 yds wide with goal posts on either side. A score is made by hitting the ball through the goal posts. There are four mounted players on each side. A game usually consists of four chukkers (round) of seven minute each. At the best times, Polo is a game with a high element of risk. Rules have been framed to make the game safer yet without interfering in the free flowing nature of the game.
