Dholpur is a small
place with a very eventful history. Founded by Dhawal Deo,
this historic city was ruled by the Chauhan family from the
mid-9th century. Its strategic location was its major
attraction and hence it was invaded repeatedly.

The main attractions are Shergarh Fort (built by Sher Shah
Suri on the site of an earlier Hindu fortress), Khanpur Mahal
(palace of Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal), Shiva Temple
(dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Talab-e-shahi (the picturesque
lake, 40kms from Dholpur, that attracts various migratory
birds in winter).
